The Challenge - You're Invited To:

Write a strong, compelling Specific Aims (or project summary) with just a few hours per week, over 8 weeks this summer.

Why Challenge Yourself This Summer?

Your reviewer makes a snap judgement within a few seconds of opening up your proposal to read - and the first thing they see is your specific aims page. If you don't have a compelling "story", then it is much less likely you will get the attention and interest of reviewers needed for their support.

This challenge is to avoid the last minute rush, and get your Aims page in shape now!

The Easiest Grant I Have Ever Written!

“...it is totally true that my last R01 was the easiest grant I have ever written and it was fun. Clarity changed the grant from work to flow. It took me 3 months to lock in the specific aims but then The grant just kind of flowed out of me so easily. I actually enjoyed it!”

-- Lisann Gittner, Researcher

Why Does This Program Work?

Grant Dynamo 3: Make your Aims "Stick"

The Grant Dynamo 3, Level 1 course is the culmination of a decade of work training researchers in the US and across the globe how to write more compelling stories. Many grant writing services out there write your grant for you - but that’s not what we do. Rather, we empower clients with the knowledge and tools of how to write a specific aims page. GD3 presents the step-by-step framework of the "Grant Story Funnel". At each step, you're given details and examples about the function that part of the story has, and how to do it effectively. You're given exercises (with worksheets) you can use each time you start a new proposal, to walk you step by step through the process, until you master it.

Training + Feedback = Progress

However, all of these new materials can be overwhelming for some. It’s natural to have a lot of questions - and to desire some sort of check-in or feedback as you ask yourself: “Am I implementing these concepts correctly? Is my hook catchy? Does my story create both desire and trust?”

During the Summer of Specific Aims, we’re here to help answer your questions. Starting in mid-June, our summer program will walk you through the Grant Dynamo 3, Level 1 course with the ultimate goal of helping you craft a Specific Aims page!

Regaining My Enthusiasm

“Morgan has given me back my enthusiasm for writing grants - rather than blame the system, I have something I can actually make a difference with.”

-- Yalda, London, UK

9+ Weeks to Develop Your Aims
June 21st - August 31st

Learn all the steps to master the art of proposal writing!

Week 1: You, Me, and Your Reviewer

This will cover your reviewer's state of mind, and how the subtleties of what you write may impact that profoundly. It will also show you how to use appropriate research to steer the response in your favor.

Week 2: Unlocking Reviewer Emotion

If you want a strong positive response, your proposal needs to be a story. This module shows you how to do that, breaking it down into the key steps you can follow to increase your chances of enthusiasm, every time.

Week 3: The Grant Story Pivot Point

Here, we address a common challenge: putting together a cohesive Grant Story Funnel that drives to a central, clear point. Often, stories end up wandering around a bit, which confuses everyone. The process of "story deconvolution" to arrive at your Grant Story Pivot Point helps focus the proposal.

Week 4: Reviewer Interest & A Strong Why

The foundational step of your story is a strong "Why The Reader Should Care" - but most people end up using generic, boring, boilerplate - which is the opposite of what you should do. This module breaks down for you exactly what to do, with a plethora of examples to illustrate.

Week 5: Setting the Stage for Trust & Desire

It's easy to rush immediately from the "WHY" into your objective or hypothesis - before the reader is ready for it. This leads to defensive responses (lower scores). It's essential to prime the reviewer so they are excited and ready for your WHAT. This module shows you how to do that, and the mistakes to avoid -- using funded examples.

Week 6: Your Trustworthy What

You may be clear on WHAT you are proposing to do, but conveying that to your reviewer in terms of a clear and compelling Objective or Hypothesis statement is not simple. There are many ways to mess this up and create confusion. This module covers a rigorous, step-by-step method for developing a strong WHAT in your proposal.

Week 7: The Who - You and Your Team

A major facet of your review will be whether you've convinced the reviewers to trust that you and your team are the best people for the job. This is far more than just slapping a bunch of biosketches together - there are both explicit and implicit things to pay careful attention to on your front page (Specific Aims, Project Summary) that will have a major effect on the response you get.

Week 8: The How - Your Aims, Objectives, and Methods

It's easy to just throw together some factual statements about "what you will do" in your aims (or objectives for NSF). Will that convince your reviewer that your aims are compelling? It's unlikely, because there are many aspects of structuring the aims for maximal impact that most proposal writers miss - especially to fit appropriately into your story. This module shows you how, with examples.

Week 9+: Wrap-Up & Specific Aims Consult

How do you summarize the impact of your proposal succinctly and powerfully? During the last few weeks of our course, we'll offer everyone the chance to sign up for a 1:1 Specific Aims consult. You'll have through the end of August to schedule your 30-minute slot, and on the consult you'll get tailored feedback on each aspect of the Grant Story Funnel and it's application in your Specific Aims Page.
